The veterinary industry is a market worth nearly 20 billion euros in Europe alone, with 85 million pet owners and 0.35 veterinarians per 1,000 inhabitants. It is only natural, then, that it draws the attention of entrepreneurs and innovators.

At Startup Bakery we therefore decided to investigate the veterinarian-client relationship, with the goal of identifying the problems veterinarians and pet owners face in their relationship and, at the same time, establishing whether a software solution could solve or mitigate those problems.

The method we follow at Startup Bakery to decide whether or not to establish a new startup is in fact extremely empirical: we analyse every business idea through various steps aimed at finding the so-called problem-solution fit. Drawing on the Lean Startup approach, we begin by analysing the problems felt by our potential customer and, subsequently, we devise solutions that specifically address the pain points detected.

What emerged from our investigation

The veterinarian is a figure whose professionalism and time often go unrecognised, and who in recent years has had to face an ever more demanding clientele, active on peer-to-peer communication systems, to the detriment of the quality of their work.

Among the most critical aspects: an overload of emails, phone calls and boundless messaging, scant recognition of the time spent on extra-visit activities, the habit of working alone and the absence of advanced digital tools for support.

We estimated that even a 50% efficiency gain on the time spent on extra activities would allow the veterinarian to treat up to 2 more animals per day.

This study is one of the steps that led to the creation of Veterly, a SaaS solution for veterinary practices that simplifies the relationship between veterinarians and clients, to the benefit of animal health.
